This marks an important foray into the telecom market for Amazon, as it is the first time a mobile operator has moved its core network to the public cloud.

Large cloud service providers such as AWS and Microsoft, attracted by billions of dollars in potential revenue in the telecommunications sector, have been looking for more access to the market. Although some telecom networks have moved IT and other non-core businesses to the public cloud, they remain cautious about the ability of the public cloud to handle mobile networks.

Mallik Rao, chief technology and information officer at Telefonica Germany, said he would like to see the transfer run for at least one or two quarters and plans to migrate at least 30-40 per cent of his customer base between 2025 and 2026.

ExceptVideopokerWith its investment in Germany, Amazon has also increased its investment in cloud computing facilities in places such as Japan and Singapore.

In January this year, Amazon announced plans to invest in Japan by 2027.Videopoker.26 trillion yen ($15.24 billion) to expand its cloud computing infrastructure, which is at the heart of the company's artificial intelligence services.

AWS said it would invest in technological facilities in metropolises such as Tokyo and Osaka to meet growing customer demand. Previously, Amazon invested 1.51 trillion yen in Japan to build cloud computing capacity between 2011 and 2022.

Recently, Amazon announced plans to invest $9 billion to expand its cloud computing infrastructure in Singapore over the next four years. The investment will double AWS's investment in Singapore and is expected to meet customers' growing demand for cloud computing services while accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence.

Priscilla Chong, AWS's Singapore regional manager, said the investment would have a positive economic knock-on effect across Singapore.

Amazon expects its planned investment to create an average of 12300 full-time jobs a year for local companies in Singapore. In addition, the company plans to hold seminars for more than 100 companies over the next two years and work with the Singapore government to help small businesses take advantage of generative artificial intelligence.
